The Tampa Cuban sandwich evolved in Florida's Ybor City, a Cuban immigrant community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It grew from a simple sandwich called the "mixto" for cigar factory workers and became a cultural fusion of ingredients from various immigrant groups: Spanish ham, Cuban mojo-marinated roast pork and bread, Italian salami, and German mustard and pickles. Tampa has since officially designated the Historic Tampa Cuban Sandwich as its signature sandwich.
